The Heritage Foundation Royal Nedlloyd is the proprietor of the art collection and other maritime heritage items of Royal (P&O) Nedlloyd and its predecessors.
The Foundation’s aim is preservation of the collection and access to it. Preservation through ownership and possibly extension and through guaranteeing the continued existence of the collection as a whole. Another aim is to provide access to the collection for ex-Nedlloyd staff and other interested individuals. With this in mind the collecton has been given in a long-term tenure to the maritime museums of Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
With the support of Royal Nedlloyd and the Nedlloyd Pension Fund a new wing was added to the Rotterdam Maritime Museum in 2004. It is here - and in the recently reopened and completely refurbished Het Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam - that objects from the collection are being exibited in changing exhibitions.
Status of the SKN Project 2019/2024
The ANBI Policy Plan Evaluation 2018/Future Exploration indicated that work would be conducted on an exploration of the future of the Nedlloyd Collection and the future of the Foundation. The following is included under point 5b of this Evaluation:
"With the nomination and appointment of new board members as mentioned above, the continuity of governance and collection management has been placed within a broader and future-proof framework. Supporting organizations focused on the ownership, preservation, and management of Dutch maritime heritage, or supporting it, as well as the expert board members nominated by them, is expected to enable the Foundation to continue pursuing its objectives in the long term. The best way to achieve this will be the subject of further consideration in 2019."
In December 2019, it was decided to launch the SKN Project to further develop this future exploration. The goal is to make the Foundation's collection accessible to all information seekers as part of the general accessibility framework for maritime collections by processing it in terms of preservation, management, and accessibility (including digitization) in accordance with the 2020 Museum Standard quality framework. The Foundation's board is the client, while the Maritime Museum Rotterdam (MMR) and the National Maritime Museum (HSM) are the contractors. In early 2020, representatives of the Foundation and the two museums initiated the further development of the project plan (design/organization, technical preconditions, timeline/planning, implementation, and costs/financing). Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the project team's work was largely suspended from March 2020 onwards. The project team resumed its activities at the end of 2021.
As a result of the first phase of the project, the board decided to complete the full registration process (including any restoration and photography) for several objects to better estimate the costs of the entire process. The goal is to eventually make the Nedlloyd collection accessible through the Maritime Resources Network. Based on the results, both museums have continued working on this. Project SKN is expected to be completed in 2025.

The Foundation received no gifts or donations in the 2024 financial year.
